A professor encouraging students to examine difficult history is not automatically the same as teaching against the Church, and the original post itself makes that distinction when it says critical thinking about complex topics is “a far cry from actively undermining the Church’s teachings.” I’d want to know what was actually said, in what course and context, before judging either the professor or BYU as a whole.

The point about students encountering difficult ideas is worth separating from the stronger accusation that BYU is abandoning its mission; critical discussion of history or doctrine is not automatically the same as undermining the Church. I would look for a specific syllabus, public statement, or firsthand account before drawing conclusions, especially since the thread itself notes that BYU remains a Church-owned institution with a stated commitment to gospel principles.

I also appreciate that your point moves beyond the dramatic story with King Lamoni: earning trust through ordinary work can be a form of discipleship in a family, ward, or workplace. His experience, and the baptism of Ventura and Luis Moreno in Nice in 1950, show how a national religious history can begin with very small personal decisions. Which people or moments from Spain’s early Church history help you see this construction milestone in a more human way?

If they have some ownership of it, getting ready is less likely to become the argument that sets the tone for the whole morning. I would rather see a teenager arrive in a clean band shirt and feel welcome than stay home because every Sunday turned into a clothing battle. Reverence can be taught without making the doorway feel like a dress inspection.
