Alma(2)

Alma(2) was the son of Alma(1), a prominent figure in the Book of Mormon. As a youth, Alma(2) was rebellious and expended great effort trying to destroy the church that his father had worked hard to establish [1][2].

While traveling with the four sons of King Mosiah, Alma(1)’s prayers were answered and Alma(2) was visited by an angel who called on him to stop his wickedness [1][2]. This experience led Alma(2) to spend three days in a helpless state, his soul racked with guilt over his actions [1][2].

After this profound experience, Alma(2) repented and became one of the greatest Nephite prophets [1][2]. When King Mosiah established the rule of the judges, Alma(2) was selected to be the first chief judge [1][2]. He served in this role for eight years before giving up the judgment seat to devote himself solely to the ministry [1][2].

Alma(2) began his ministerial work in Zarahemla and then traveled to other Nephite cities [1][2]. He eventually went to Ammonihah, where he was initially rejected, but was then visited again by the same angel who had called him to repentance [1][2]. This time, the angel rejoiced over Alma(2)’s faithfulness and instructed him to return to Ammonihah, which he did speedily [1][2]. It was then that Alma(2) met Amulek, and they had remarkable experiences recorded in Alma chapters 8-15 [1][2].

Alma(2) also had a significant missionary experience among the Zoramites, as recorded in Alma chapters 31-35 [1][2]. After leaving his blessing upon his sons and the church, Alma(2) left Zarahemla on his way to Melek, but he never arrived. The scriptures state that he was “taken up by the Spirit, or buried by the hand of the Lord, even as Moses” [1][2].
