Ammaron was the brother of Amos, and he became one of the keepers of the records after the appearance of the Savior to the Nephites (4 Nephi 1:47). By the time Ammaron received the plates, the people had become wicked. The Lord instructed Ammaron to hide the records, so he hid them in the hill Shim in the land Antum (4 Nephi 1:47).
When Ammaron was an old man, he went to the young Mormon(2) (who was then 10 years old) and told him about the records that were hidden. Ammaron essentially ordained Mormon(2) to receive the records when he turned 24 years old (Mormon 1:2-4).
So in summary, Ammaron was a keeper of the sacred records after the Savior’s visit to the Nephites, and he hid the records when the people had become wicked, instructing the young Mormon(2) to retrieve them when he came of age. Ammaron played a crucial role in preserving the Nephite records for future generations.
