Antionah was one of the chief rulers of the city of Ammonihah (Alma 12:20). He led the verbal assault against Alma and Amulek when they were preaching in Ammonihah (Alma 12:20). Antionah may have also been involved in the murder of the believers in Ammonihah, as the text states that “the chief judge of the land” ordered the women and children who believed in Alma and Amulek’s teachings to be thrown into the fire (Alma 14:2-4).
The Book of Mormon provides further details about the events in Ammonihah. Alma had gone to preach in Ammonihah, but the people would not listen to him. They threw him out of the city (Alma 8:12-13). An angel then appeared to Alma and told him to return to Ammonihah (Alma 8:14-16).
When Alma returned, he met a man named Amulek, who took him into his home and provided him with food. Alma and Amulek then began preaching together in Ammonihah (Alma 8:19-21, 10:12). Their preaching led many of the people to believe and begin repenting (Alma 14:1).
However, the majority of the people in Ammonihah became angry with Alma and Amulek. They arrested the two men and brought them before the chief judge, who was likely Antionah (Alma 14:2-4). The chief judge then ordered the women and children who believed in Alma and Amulek’s teachings to be thrown into the fire, while Alma and Amulek were forced to watch (Alma 14:8-9).
After many days of imprisonment and abuse, Alma and Amulek were miraculously delivered from prison by the power of God. The prison walls collapsed, killing the wicked men who had been tormenting Alma and Amulek (Alma 14:25-29).
The Book of Mormon teaches that those who reject the gospel message and persecute the Lord’s servants will be held accountable for their actions (Alma 14:11). Antionah, as one of the chief rulers of Ammonihah, played a key role in the persecution and murder of the believers, and will face the consequences of his wicked deeds.
