Antipus

Antipus was a Nephite military commander who led a portion of the Nephite army during the war against the Lamanites (Alma 56:9). When the Lamanites had captured several Nephite cities and greatly reduced Antipus’s army, Helaman arrived with his 2,000 stripling warriors to assist Antipus (Alma 56:9-10). Antipus rejoiced exceedingly at the arrival of Helaman’s reinforcements (Alma 56:10).

During a battle, Antipus and many of the other Nephite leaders were killed, leaving the weary and confused Nephite army close to defeat (Alma 56:49-53). However, Helaman’s 2,000 young warriors, who were “men of truth and soberness” (Alma 53:20-21), were able to rally the Nephite forces and help them prevail against the Lamanites (Alma 56:54-56).

Sadly, Antipus was slain in battle shortly after the arrival of Helaman and his stripling warriors (Alma 56:51). His death was a great loss for the Nephite army, but the faith and obedience of Helaman’s young soldiers helped to turn the tide of the battle.

The account of Antipus and the 2,000 stripling warriors is found in Alma 56-57 (pages 343-347 in the Book of Mormon).
