Archeantus

Archeantus was a commander in the Nephite army under the leadership of Mormon (Mormon 9:2) [1]. He was killed in a “sore battle” with the Lamanites, in which the Nephites did not conquer (Mormon 9:2) [1].

The fact that Mormon specifically mentions Archeantus, along with Luram and Emron, suggests that Archeantus was an important military leader for the Nephites (Mormon 9:2) [1]. His death was a significant loss for the Nephite forces.

The battle in which Archeantus was killed likely took place sometime between AD 375-380, based on the context provided in Mormon’s letter to his son Moroni (Moroni 9) [2]. This was a period of great turmoil and decline for the Nephite civilization, as they suffered a series of defeats and retreats against the Lamanites (Mormon 4-6) [2].

Despite the grim circumstances, Mormon urged his son Moroni to continue laboring diligently, expressing hope that Moroni would be spared to witness either the repentance of the Nephites or their utter destruction (Moroni 9:6, 22-24) [1]. Archeantus’s sacrifice was part of this tragic chapter in Nephite history.
