Health Is a Stewardship: How Babylon’s Medicine Distracts Us from God’s Law of Health and Destroys Our Spiritual Agency

In a world where nearly every inconvenience, emotion, or bodily function is labeled a medical disorder, the vast majority of people have surrendered their health and their agency to Babylon’s system. But for those who have eyes to see and ears to hear, it is clear that we were warned. The Lord gave us a law of health not just to protect our physical bodies, but to preserve our spiritual freedom, our clarity of mind, and our ability to serve Him without bondage.

That law is the Word of Wisdom, and it is more relevant today than ever before.

We live in a time when taking prescription medication is considered normal, expected, and even responsible. But look deeper. Nearly every American is on something. Antidepressants, hormone pills, sleep aids, anti-anxiety drugs, painkillers, mood stabilizers, and dozens more. The list is long, the bottles are stacked, and yet the people are not thriving. They are surviving. Barely. This is not the Lord’s way.

The Word of Wisdom Was a Warning, Not a Suggestion

The Lord revealed the Word of Wisdom in 1833 as a principle with a promise, warning against the use of harmful substances and calling His Saints to live differently than the world. And yet, how many of us today have replaced the wine and strong drink of old with modern pills that cloud the mind, damage the body, and sever the spirit’s connection to divine direction?

Are we obeying the Word of Wisdom in principle if we have traded alcohol for antidepressants? Have we truly set ourselves apart from Babylon if we are numbing ourselves with pharmaceuticals instead of kneeling in prayer and fasting for clarity?

It is not just what we eat or drink. It is about how we choose to treat the body the Lord gave us. That body is a temple, and it was meant to be governed with reverence, not handed over to corporations who profit from our dependency.

Pharmaceutical Dependency is Modern Bondage

It is a sobering truth that over one hundred FDA-approved drugs cause suicidal thoughts as a known side effect. This includes antidepressants, asthma medications, sleep aids, hormone treatments, and even smoking cessation tools. We are not talking about obscure chemicals. These are mainstream prescriptions being handed to teenagers, young mothers, returned missionaries, and elderly members of our wards.

This is not health. It is spiritual compromise.

When we rely on Babylon’s solutions for everything, from sadness to sleeplessness, from appetite control to emotional regulation, we begin to surrender the very agency that is central to the plan of salvation. Satan seeks to cloud the mind, dull the senses, and enslave the soul. And what better tool than a system that calls dependency treatment and sells sedation as healing?

We cannot live the gospel fully if we are chemically numbed. We cannot serve the Lord with all our heart, might, mind, and strength if we are physically broken, mentally fogged, or emotionally flatlined.

The Law of Health Is the Law of Liberty

The Lord’s plan has always centered on light, intelligence, and self-mastery. He asks us to rise above the world’s way of doing things. That includes health. He has promised in Doctrine and Covenants 89 that those who keep this law will receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones and shall run and not be weary, and walk and not faint.

That is not just poetic language. It is a covenant promise.

But that promise cannot be claimed by a people who disregard it. When we flood our bodies with chemicals that alter hormones, damage circulation, impair fertility, induce suicidal ideation, and weaken our God-given vitality, we are distancing ourselves from the blessings that the Lord stands ready to pour out.

Many of the medications people are prescribed today, statins, SSRIs, hormonal contraceptives, antipsychotics, painkillers, are not neutral. They come with long-term risks, serious physical consequences, and spiritual side effects that no drug label will ever mention.

Take Your Stewardship Seriously

This is not a call to recklessness or to reject every tool the Lord may inspire a physician to use. It is a call to discernment. It is a call to seek answers in prayer before prescriptions. It is a reminder that our Heavenly Father has already given us the foundation of good health. Whole foods. Herbs. Clean water. Rest. Work. Community. Spiritual practice. Time in nature. A day of rest. A mind filled with scripture, not pills.

It is time to purge our homes, our habits, and our hearts of anything that numbs our ability to feel the Spirit. It is time to see medication not as a first resort, but as a last and temporary tool used with careful, inspired oversight. It is time to stop trusting Babylon’s doctors more than the Lord’s prophets.

Babylon is building its tower higher every day, and the medical system is one of its strongest bricks. But the Lord has a better way, and He gave it to us in plainness.

We must not forget it. We must not surrender our agency. And we must not trade the peace of God for the promises of the pharmacy.

Your body is a temple. Keep it clean. Keep it strong. Keep it under the Lord’s law, not Babylon’s.
