Alma was a Nephite prophet in the Book of Mormon. He was initially a priest who served in the court of the wicked King Noah. [1][2] When the prophet Abinadi preached to Noah’s court and condemned the king and his people for their wickedness, Alma believed Abinadi and affirmed that his words were true. [3] For this, Noah banished Alma and tried to have him killed.
After leaving the court, Alma went into hiding and wrote down Abinadi’s teachings. He then began propagating this gospel and organizing his followers into a church that he founded. Alma gathered his followers to a place called the Waters of Mormon, where he secretly taught them and baptized them en masse. When Alma’s church was discovered, Noah prepared to attack them, but Alma and his people were able to flee into the wilderness and eventually settle in a land called Helam.
Years later, Alma’s people were discovered and conquered by the Lamanites, who placed them under the authority of Amulon, a former priest of King Noah. Amulon began to persecute Alma’s people. However, Alma and his people were eventually able to escape the Lamanites and were led by God through the wilderness for 12 days until they arrived in the land of Zarahemla, where they joyfully united with the Nephites.
In Zarahemla, King Mosiah authorized Alma to serve as the first high priest over the Church. Alma continued in this capacity for many years, preaching repentance, baptizing new converts, and establishing churches. Before his death, Alma bestowed the leadership of the Nephite church to his son, also named Alma.
